We are used to searching for "Mexican restaurant near me". Google returns great results for a query like this. However, have you tried searching for "Churros near me"? At Google, we recently launched a new enhancement to search that allows product queries, such as "Milk near me", "Celery near me" or "12 string guitar near me", to return local results - places on maps, nearby, that sell the product. This is an extremely challenging problem. Part of the challenge to making this work is that 70% of stores worldwide - and 40% in the US - do not have a web page, Google's primary data source for search. In this talk, Dr. Welty will present solutions to overcome this data problem. The solution combines Knowledge Graphs, AI and Human Common Sense, that demonstrates both the promises and limitations of AI in solving practical business problems.
